Hi J Smith,

Though Spokeo can feel quite intrusive, the truth is it's not in violation of any privacy law.

The only thing that Spokeo does is to provide a single window into all the public data that your friend has published on various sites (knowingly or unknowingly). All of this information is equally accessible to any one who has the time to visit each site and scrape the information from there. If you signed up for a service and accepted the EULA, then by default you can't complain when your data winds up on Spokeo.

A friend checked her name and even email contacts came up. This is not right! You should be able to opt-out without opting out of every site you choose to sign up for. Spokeo should not be including anyone. People can join IF THEY CHOOSE, not have a spysite track our every move. Where the hell are our friggin' rights???? SPOKEO IS AN INVASION OF PRIVACY!

Divya - Spokeo is a bit troubling in that it isn't even about opting out of Spokeo, you have to opt-out of every service you use to avoid getting Spokeo. And stuff like this really isn't helping IMO.

I have looked at Imaginary Friends in Friendfeed but that whole process is a bit to manual to be viable. Right now I use Spokeo as a way to track what folks do on services I don't really use like Picasa and MySpace. If they are on services I use as well, I delete that. Not really something I can do in Friendfeed.

That is quite interesting. But I am less tempted to try any opt-out service. I would rather trust the opt-in service! Plus you can always add imaginary friends for those you want to follow but are not on friendfeed.
