Ashwin - I would say that most of the temples I visited during that trip are reasonably well maintained (with the exception of the forgotten temple of course..). I agree with you regarding the problem of caste-based customs and cold shoulder to foreigners/photographers when it comes to the out of way temples. The larger temples nowadays seem more accommodating of foreigners if you flash some rupee notes, which is sad in it's own way...

While the temples in Karnataka are known for their intricate carvings, there is no doubt that the TN temples are unbeatable in sheer scale. TN temple gopuras have no match anywhere in India!

From my experience, I found that (sadly) TN temples are quite badly maintained, not very friendly to non-Tamil speaking visitors, many temple customs are somewhat caste based and not very welcome to foreigners and photographers. This is from the visits to some of the most famous temples in TN. I have no idea how good/bad the situation would be for the off-the-beaten-trail temples that you visited!
