Nuts and Bolts
The site is hosted by bluehost, and runs on LAMP. I’m using WordPress as my blog software backend – I love the plugin architecture of WordPress and my first stand-alone blog on weblogs.us was Wordpress based, so it’s the only blog software that I really know. Development was done in a WAMP environment, using a laptop running Windows XP SP2.
Look and Feel
Visually, the blog uses a heavily modified version of the Web2.0 theme, developed by Niel Merton of mewebdev. I’ve moved away from the older cluttered look where nearly 20 Wordpress plugins added content in some way to the page seen by a visitor. I now use only the following plugins to actually add content a visitor sees:
- BackType Connect
- Comment Quicktags – Reloaded
- FD Feedburner Plugin
- Link Indication
- Old Post Alert
- Popularity Contest
- Rate My Stuff
- Contact Form
- Simple Tags
- WP-Footnotes
- WP-Grins
- Subscribe to Comments
Hopefully my new-found restraint means faster page loads and a less annoying experience for you – my unexpected visitor
Standards & Compatibility
The blog is fully standards-compliant (check out the sidebar!) – something that turned out to be much harder that I expected.
The site works as designed when viewed with a modern, standards-compliant (Firefox, Safari, Opera and even Internet Explorer 7) browser, running in 1024×768 resolution with Javascript turned on. Older browsers such as Internet Explorer 5.5 will work fine as well. If you are using something exotic like the Nintendo Wii browser, I cannot predict what will happen.
Feeds
The main site feed is handled by Feedburner.
Other Things
This page lists all the tags that I used so far in the blog – although not directly visible, they are the basis on which the “Related Posts” list is generated in the sidebar.
